Enrollment Update

Enrollment Update 

Fall 2009 enrollment on Indiana Wesleyan University's Marion campus is up 1.4 percent from a year ago. Enrollment in Marion has increased 22.3 percent over the last five years.  There are 3,245 students enrolled this fall, in what once comprised the College of Arts and Sciences as it was organized in past years, compared to 3,201 in 2008.  This will be the final time we will compare these numbers in this manner.   Also noteworthy is the number of commuter students on the Marion campus is the largest ever, generally indicates a higher number of local students. 

IWU's overall 2009 enrollment has decreased by 97 students. Total enrollment this year stands at 15,345, compared to 15,442 a year ago.

Over the past five years, however, IWU's overall enrollment has grown by 34.5 percent. 

Because of IWU's recently completed academic restructuring, statistical comparisons or final enrollment number breakdowns for the various academic divisions of the University need to be coordinated with Associate Provost, Dr. Don Sprowl.   Please contact Dr. Sprowl for the specific information. 

As you know, the 2008 academic structure consisted of three colleges. The 2009 academic structure consists of two colleges – the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Adult and Professional Studies, the Graduate School, the School of Nursing as well as the newly formed Seminary.

WILSON CONTINUES SERVICE TO TRI DELTA FOUNDATION

Kathy Kruger Wilson, a resident of Francesville, will continue to serve
as a member
of the Delta Delta Delta sorority foundation Board of Trustees. First
appointed to
the Foundation Board in 2004, Ms. Wilson holds the office of secretary
of the Executive Committee.

Ms. Wilson has pursued an active career in the in the area of research
and development. She is the co-author of Conducting a Successful
Development Services Program and was recognized for her leadership in
that field with the naming of a scholarship in her honor by the
Association of Professional Researchers Advancement-IN. Ms. Wilson
served as

Director of Research and Director of Development Services at Indiana
University. At the present she works for DonorSearch.net, a prospect
research firm. Ms. Wilson holds an associate degree from Ball State
University and received a Bachelor's degree from Indiana Wesleyan
University.

Ms. Wilson is a member of the Association of Professional Researchers
for Advancement, the Association of Advancement Services Professionals
and the Autism Society of America. She is actively involved in the West
Central Autism Resource Team, a member of the School Accreditation team
and a member of the Rural Electric Community Fund Committee.

Now observing its twentieth year of operation, the Foundation funds
sorority programming, undergraduate and graduate scholarships and
emergency assistance to collegiate and alumni in financial crisis.
Since its inception over $1.2 million in scholarship monies and more
than $1 million dollars to Tri Deltas with unexpected financial
hardships has been awarded to members. The Foundation is a 501 3 c
organization.

Founded in 1888, Tri Delta is a leader among social Greek organizations
through its passion for progress and visionary thinking. The
fraternity has a continuing partnership with St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital; Tri Delta collegians have raised several million

collegians and Kristen's Story which seeks to address the signs of

Dr. R. Duane Thompson
January 10, 1931 - May 6, 2009

Dr. R. Duane Thompson, 78, Chairman of the Indiana Wesleyan University
Division of Religion and Philosophy for 17 years, died at 12:15 a.m.
Wednesday (May 6) in Community Hospital North, Indianapolis. He taught
at IWU for 40 years before retiring in 1997.

Dr. Thompson had lived in Indianapolis for several years.

Dr. Thompson was a native of Marion and graduated from Sweetser High
School. He earned a bachelor's degree from IWU in 1952 and also had a
master's degree from Butler University and a doctoral degree in
philosophy from Boston University. He was a pastor of Wesleyan churches
in Ohio for seven years before he began his teaching career.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter, Renee Herrli, Marion; and
a son, Rev. R. Duane Thompson, Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the old College Wesleyan
Church in Marion. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at
Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, in Marion.

Memorials may be made to the Indiana Wesleyan University Division of
Religion and Philosophy.

It is with great pride and joy that the President’s Office invites all of campus to share a special day in our lives as we honor Mary Ellen.

As you can see Mary Ellen has had a most lustrous career!

 

Mary Ellen was born in Coshocton, Ohio, into a minister’s home.  She received her high school diploma from Colonel White High School in Dayton, Ohio, in June 1961.  Mary Ellen attended Central Wesleyan College (Southern Wesleyan), South Carolina, as an Elementary Education major (1961-1964 – 1st semester).  She transferred to and attended Marion College (Indiana Wesleyan University), Marion, Indiana, 2nd semester, 1964.  She worked for Mullane’s Candy Company at their “candy bar” in a tea room, Cincinnati, Ohio.  She worked as secretary to the Marketing Manager of the Wesleyan Publishing House for 3 years.   

 

From October 1967 – August 1969 she worked as a clerk for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. Film Library in Columbus, Ohio.  Mary Ellen worked for The Wesleyan Church Headquarters as Executive Secretary for one of four General Superintendents for just over 17 years (April, 1970-August, 1987).  Total years at The Wesleyan World Headquarters was just over 20 years (adding in the 3 ½ years as secretary to the Marketing Manager of Wesleyan Publishing House).  When the decision was made by The Wesleyan Church to locate to Indianapolis, she resigned from her position. 

 

Mary Ellen has worked as an executive assistant at IWU since August 1987 (almost 22 years) as Division Secretary for the Division of Religion and Philosophy and personal secretary to the division chair (August 1987-June 1988); and as executive assistant to the President (June 26, 1988-June 30, 2009).

Dr. Byron Tippey stopped in at the Alumni House to view his portraits. After teaching at IWU (now retired) Dr. Tippey appreciates the opportunity to impact lives. Bonnie Biggs, Alumni Relations Event Coordinator was present and talked about many experiences when she was a student in 1967-1969. She related a story of how she had to miss class because of a severe snow storm. Dr. Tippey laughed as he recalled how he told Bonnie to try to make the next class and be careful traveling. The portraits will be on display at the Alumni House.

Dr. A. Michael Goff, Professor of Biology at IWU since 1977, will be retiring at the end of this semester.  The Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics requests the honor of your presence at a reception to recognize Dr. Goff and wish him well. 

 

We will be hosting this reception today, Thursday, April 16, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the Student Center Piazza.

 

We have sent invitations to several of our alumni regarding a special Division reception that we are having next Thursday, April 23, 7:00-9:00 p.m., on the BHSN Rooftop Plaza.  We plan a special "SURPRISE" recognition time between 7:30-8:30 p.m.

 

We have also sent information to alumni regarding a book that is being put together by Stan McVay and Shirley Gates.  That information is as follows:

 

After well over thirty years as Professor of Biology at Indian Wesleyan University, Dr. A. Michael Goff is retiring this spring. As his student or colleague you are invited to write a letter of memories and congratulations to Dr. Goff. You may include references to a classroom incident or one that occurred on one of his many IWU trips with students, or of some other positive influence he has had on your life. Feel free to include photos. These letters will be placed in a three-ring binder and given to Dr. Goff at his retirement reception on April 23, 2009. Charlene B. Thornton Named Special Agent in Charge of FBI Honolulu Division

Charlene B. Thornton has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s Honolulu Division. Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed her to this position to replace SAC Janet Kammerman, who was recently appointed Associate Executive Assistant Director of the Human Resources Branch at FBI Headquarters. Most recently, Ms. Thornton served as SAC of the San Francisco Division.

Ms. Thornton entered on duty as an FBI special agent in 1979. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, she conducted a variety of criminal, counterintelligence, and counterterrorism investigations at the Indianapolis and Los Angeles Divisions. In 1985, she was promoted to a supervisory position in the Legal Counsel Division at FBI Headquarters, where she assisted in the defense of the FBI and FBI employees. In 1989, she became Chief of the Legal Research Unit, responsible for providing legal advice and guidance to FBI executives and field offices.

Mrs. Thornton left FBI Headquarters in 1991 to return to the field. After three years supervising applicant, civil rights, white collar crime, and violent crime squads in the Baltimore Division, she was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Honolulu Division in 1995. While there, she managed all investigative programs and had primary responsibility for administrative management. She also oversaw the FBI's extraterritorial investigations throughout Asia and the Pacific.

In 1997, Ms. Thornton returned to FBI Headquarters as Deputy General Counsel, overseeing the FBI's legal training, forfeiture, and legal advice programs. She served in that role until 1999, when she moved to the FBI’s Inspection Division. As an Inspector, she was responsible for overseeing comprehensive audits of the FBI's investigative and administrative operations.

Ms. Thornton was named SAC of the Birmingham Division in 2000. In that capacity, she directed all FBI operations in the Northern District of Alabama. In 2002, she assumed the duties of SAC Phoenix, responsible for all FBI operations in the state of Arizona. She served in Phoenix until 2004, when she was appointed Assistant Director of the Inspection Division at FBI Headquarters. In that role she was responsible for the oversight of internal investigations of employee misconduct, as well as for evaluating the FBI’s investigative, financial, and administrative programs. In 2006, she was named SAC of the San Francisco Division.

Ms. Thornton graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, with a degree in Political Science and Economics. She earned a Juris Doctorate, with honors, from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, and a Masters of Law in Taxation from the University of San Diego Law School. She is a graduate of the National Executive Institute and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2005, Mrs. Thornton was awarded the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive in recognition of her sustained high level of achievement in managing demanding and multifaceted FBI operations.

New Wesleyan Seminary at IWU - Marion Campus

MARION — Indiana Wesleyan University plans to open a seminary for the Wesleyan Church next September on its Marion campus.

The school says the seminary will include about 200 students currently enrolled in master's programs and 75 other master of divinity students entering over the course of its first year.

Only about 15 percent of Wesleyan pastors hold seminary degrees, but leaders of the Fishers, Ind.-based denomination say they hope the seminary will double that number.

Indiana Wesleyan says all of the seminary's students will be required to have full-time ministries in local churches while they pursue their degrees.

The Wesleyan Church has 400,000 members in 80 countries.

Seminary to Open At Indiana Wesleyan University

The first seminary in the history of The Wesleyan Church will open in September on the Marion campus of Indiana Wesleyan University. The IWU Board of Trustees unanimously approved the historic proposal on April 3.

The seminary format will be similar to IWU’s successful adult education programs, which allow students to further their education while maintaining family and professional responsibilities.

"We have taken the very best of the future and the very best of the past to create a new model," IWU President Henry Smith said. "Our purpose was to make a seminary education more practical, more accessible and more affordable."

Although seminary training is encouraged, only about 15 percent of Wesleyan pastors have seminary degrees. Denominational leaders are hoping the new IWU seminary will double that number.

While Wesleyan pastors are seen as key candidates, the seminary is expected to draw ministerial students from other evangelical Christian denominations.

A seminary task force, consisting of officials from IWU and The Wesleyan Church, met for two years to consider creating a seminary in Marion. Dr. Ken Schenck and Rev. Russ Gunsalus, IWU religion professors, guided the task force.

The idea gained momentum in December when the Higher Learning Commission extended IWU’s accreditation to include the Master of Divinity (M Div.) degree. The M. Div. is the foundational degree for a seminary.

The seminary will open this fall with an expected 200 students who currently are enrolled in master’s programs plus 75 M.Div. students over the course of the first year.

A $6 million building, that would include classrooms, offices and lodging for students, already is on the drawing board, but no date has been set for the start of construction. The building is planned for the 4400 block of South Landess Street.

All students will be required to have – and to maintain – full-time ministries in local churches while they pursue a seminary degree. "We do not want to take seminary students away from their local churches and their ministries," Smith said.

Many students, who do not live close to campus, can take two-thirds of their classes online and come to campus for intense one-week classes. Students within driving distance of Marion can take all of their classes on campus.

The 75-hour M. Div. degree will take four years to complete. As many as four professors will teach each class to better integrate various components – such as Bible, theology, church history and practical applications – into each course.

"I firmly believe this will be the most practical seminary in the world," said Dr. Kerry Kind, General Director of Education and the Ministry for The Wesleyan Church.

The IWU Board of trustees will govern the seminary and will appoint a seminary board. The seminary, which does not yet have a name, will have a chief operating officer, an academic dean and its own faculty.

"Several faculty members already are teaching in our graduate religion programs, and we are in an active search to build a new faculty of ministry scholars," said IWU Provost David Wright.

The Wesleyan Church was formed in1968 through the mergers of several like-minded denominations, dating as far back as 1843. The denomination has 400,000 constituents in 4,000 churches and missions in 80 countries.

In addition to IWU, the denomination operates colleges in Houghton, New York; Central, South Carolina, and Bartlesville, Oklahoma. There also is a Wesleyan Bible college in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada.

Indiana Wesleyan University is an evangelical Christian comprehensive university of The Wesleyan Church, which has its world headquarters in Fishers, Indiana. IWU was founded in 1920 and is committed to liberal arts and professional education.

More than 3,200 students are enrolled in traditional programs on the University’s main campus in Marion. Another 12,200 adult learners attend classes at regional campuses in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio and online.

 

Retirement event: Jerry Showalter Open House / also information about the retirement of Dr. Mike Goff

Jerry Showalter, Professor of Business at IWU, will be retiring at the
end of this semester. The Division of Business will be hosting an open
house to honor Prof. Showalter' many years of dedicated service to the
Division of Business and to wish him well in his retirement.

The reception will be this Wednesday, April 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in
the Division of Business office, Maxwell 206.

Please plan to attend to greet and honor Professor Showalter. If you

experience teaching, are retiring at the end of the school year.

Dr. Keith Newman next VP University Relations

Dr. Keith Newman to Join IWU as Vice President for University Relations

I am pleased to share the good news that Dr. Keith Newman has accepted our invitation to become IWU's next Vice President for University Relations. He has held the same position at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio since January 2003.

Dr. Newman will join IWU on July 1, 2009, and will be a member of the President's Cabinet.

Before joining Mount Vernon Nazarene, Dr. Newman was a pastor for 18 years in the Nazarene Church. He served as the senior pastor of large Nazarene churches in Arkansas, Texas and California. Dr. Newman is an exceptional mission fit. Although he has served the Nazarene Church for several years, he is committed to joining The Wesleyan Church.

I have known Keith since he joined Mount Vernon Nazarene seven years ago and feel we can work together effectively. The chemistry between a University president and the Vice President of University Relations is so important because of the need for the two of us to travel together extensively.

Dr. David Blanchard, who chairs the University Relations Committee of the IWU Board of Trustees, interviewed Dr. Newman and said he was very

favorably impressed with Dr. Newman's breadth of experience and credentials and his commitment to furthering Christ's Kingdom through Higher Education.

Dr. Newman has a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Houston Baptist University and a Master of Ministry degree from Southern Nazarene University. He earned his Ed.D. degree in Leadership Education from Spalding University. He also has a Certificate in Fundraising Management from The Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University in Indianapolis.

Before beginning his ministry in the Nazarene Church, Dr. Newman served for nine years as a police officer and detective sergeant on the Houston (Texas) Police Department. Dr. Newman has taken an active role in the Mount Vernon, Ohio, community since he joined the Mount Vernon Nazarene University six years ago. He has served on the board of directors of the American Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

For three decades, Dr. Newman has been a speaker at youth camps, conventions, retreats, capital stewardship banquets, parent-teacher organizations and civic associations. He was a founding trustee of a Christian high school in Houston.

Keith's wife, Carolyn and their high school daughter, Alana, will join the IWU family later this summer.

Dr. Newman will succeed Dr. Brian Simmons, who recently resigned earlier to become President of the Association of Christian Schools International. Dr. Simmons has served IWU very capably for the last three years and we all pray the very best for the next steps for the Brian and Bonnie in Colorado Springs.

Pike Youth Soccer Club coach earns national honor

National award takes Isang Jacob by surprise

Isang Jacob has played soccer in front of more than 40,000 people, but he's never been as nervous as he was waiting for the announcement of the U.S. Youth Soccer Competitive Coach of the Year Award on March 6.

The Pike Youth Soccer Club coach, who was so sure he wouldn't be named the organization's state coach of the year that he took his shoes off at the banquet to be more comfortable, was chosen from four regional winners by the U.S. Youth Soccer board of directors at the Youth Soccer Workshop in San Jose, Calif. The award is based on sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development and community involvement.

"I was truly humbled and surprised when I won the state award," said Jacob. He has led the Indy Burn 90 Premier Eagles to seven consecutive state championships and has had all of his players earn scholarships, 17 of them to Division I programs. "Getting the regional (award) blew me away. I opened the letter and started shaking, then I called everyone I knew. I've never been more nervous in my life (when the national award was announced). I don't deserve it. There are so many great coaches across the country."

Jacob was an assistant coach at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis after playing at Indiana Wesleyan, but while recruiting, he decided players in the Indianapolis area needed to develop better fundamentals. He quit IUPUI and started working as a volunteer coach with younger players.

"I wanted to give them practical knowledge, the right technique and help them be fine young men and citizens," Jacob said. "I've been with this group since they were 11 and have retained 75 percent of them. I had everyone tell me it would not work. But I sit back and see these kids going to Harvard, Cornell, Butler, IUPUI, West Virginia. . . . I'm truly honored and humbled."

Jacob, who also was named Indiana's coach of the year in 2004, serves as the head of Indiana's U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program. He was a two-time NCCAA All-American and was invited to play on the Nigerian Senior National Team in 1991.

"I believe many of us at the Pike Soccer Club are still a bit unbelieving of this award," Pike Youth Soccer Club Executive Director Tom Geisse said in an e-mail. "Oft times we don't think many folks outside Indianapolis recognize the long hours and hard work of the Pike Soccer Club coaches for the past 30 years. Today, the families of Pike Youth Soccer Club are very proud of Isang Jacob's accomplishments on and off the field during his decade of service to Indianapolis youth."

IWU has new University Registrar

On behalf of the Office of the Provost, we are pleased to announce
that Indiana Wesleyan University has a new University Registrar, Mrs.
Kim Nicholson.

Kim received both her BS and MA degrees from IWU. She is currently
serving as Director of Records, and has also had experience in the
College of Adult and Professional Studies. She brings an
understanding of the diversity of the programs and students served by
IWU.

Kim is a gifted administrator, a skilled counselor, and a Christ-like
leader. Her gifts and abilities, and her heart for the Lord and
members of the IWU community make her a perfect fit for the position
of University Registrar.

Please join us in welcoming Kim to her new position, and prayerfully
support her during the transition and extra load she will carry until
a new Director of Records is hired. We would covet your prayers that
God will send just the right person for that position.

Dr. Brian Simmons Resigns as IWU Vice President

It is with mixed emotions that I announce to the IWU family that Dr. Brian Simmons, Vice President for University Relations, submitted his resignation this week.

Dr. Simmons has accepted a position as President of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), which has 5,300 member schools in 100 countries. ACSI has its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and has 18 regional offices around the world. The details of his departure have yet to be finalized but he will be concluding his work at IWU sometime this summer.

I appreciate Dr. Simmons' many contributions to Indiana Wesleyan University over the past three years. Although his departure is a great loss to IWU, the presidency of ACSI is an exceptionally good fit for Dr. Simmons since before coming to IWU in 2006, he served for 10 years as Superintendent of Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis, and he is very connected to the Christian school movement.

I value the fact that Dr. Simmons will be serving as president of ASCI, one of the largest Christian school organizations in the world. Many students from ASCI member institutions have attended IWU, and I'm looking forward to continuing a positive relationship with the President of the organization. I know Brian will be a friend of IWU.

"I so very much enjoy serving the Lord with you here at IWU," Dr. Simmons said. "I believe in IWU, its mission and our emerging vision to change the world!" He also noted in his letter of resignation that IWU wouldn't be seeing the end of the Simmons family as his youngest daughter has just been accepted in the IWU freshman class of 2009.

A Life of Service - Gladys Maxine Wilson

A life of service begins with a single step. For each person that step is at a different place and time, but it is the beginning of a rewarding life in service of others.

 

Gladys Maxine Wilson was born on March 21, 1923 in Faulkton, S.D., to Ed and Mabel Sime – salt of the earth farmers. She loved school from an early age and eagerly looked forward to her time in the one-room school house. To attend high school she had to board in town and only see her family on weekends, but it was a small sacrifice for this eager student. Post-high school she spent 2 years at Miltonville Wesleyan and then transferred to Indiana Wesleyan where she received a BA in religion.

 

It was during her time in college that she met Beverly Frank Wilson. Although she was sure this was the right match, she had to wait for Bev to finish his Army assignment before they could wed. Then she settled into a life of service as a minister's wife. Their first assignment was in a very small country church in one of the poorest parts of Kentucky. The assignment was a challenging one for the newlyweds, but they made a great team. This was followed by 8 years in Canandaigua, New York, 8 years at the Wesley Methodist Church in Mitchell, South Dakota and 9 year at the Lincoln Oaks Wesleyan Methodist Church in Fair Oaks, California. Each assignment came with its own unique challenges. The move to California was especially difficult for the mid-west farm girl, but she trusted that the Lord was taking her where she would best serve.

 

The last move Bev and Gladys made was to Arrow Highway Wesleyan Methodist Church in Azusa, California. It was during this time that Bev developed cancer and passed away in his mid-fifties. What followed was a time of turmoil for Gladys as her commitment to service was part of her husband's ministry. She faced not only the loss of a spouse, but the loss of her identity. A door at Azusa Pacific University opened working in the office, but over time she began to develop the Heart to Heart Ministry which became her passion. For the last 20 years she focused on this program exclusively. The program filled her need to help others and was a blessing for those who participated – a match made in heaven.

 

After 30 years at Azusa Pacific, Gladys Maxine Wilson passed away 1 month before her 86th birthday. She worked up until the day before her stroke with the full support of the University. The students, mentors and staff she dealt with were her second family. She is survived by many family members: sister Lucille, brothers Wes and Arv; children Ron, Marilyn and Wes and her cherished grandchildren Aaron, Danielle, Evan, Breanna, Nathan, Lauren, Melissa and Johnathan. We will all dearly miss her.
