Jacob takes over IUPUI soccer

IWU grad to keep Jaguars moving forward

Isang Jacob's journey to the United States that started with playing soccer at Indiana Wesleyan University has landed him his first head-coaching job.

Jacob, who was born in Nigeria, was recently announced as the new men's soccer coach at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Jacob takes over for Steve Franklin.

"I plan to do well and keep the program moving forward," Jacob said. "I have been around IUPUI previously as an assistant coach, so I know they have a great program."

Jacob graduated from Indiana Wesleyan in 1992. During his time with the Wildcats, he was a three-time All-Mid-Central Conference and two-time National Christian College Athletic Association All-American with the Wildcats.

"Marion will always have a special place in my heart," Jacob said. "That was my first home I had in America."

Following his time at Indiana Wesleyan, Jacob was invited to train with the Nigerian Senior National Team while also attempting to start his professional career. He played with the Houston Force and the Indianapolis Blast in the American Professional Soccer League.

Jacob then became the top assistant at IUPUI in 1995 and helped lead the Jaguars to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 2000. Jacob was with IUPUI from 1995 through 2002, and during that time the Jaguars averaged more than nine wins per season.

"I'm honored and humbled to take over a program like IUPUI," Jacob said. "I had helped them out in the past as an assistant, and they had a lot of success then. I'm just really thankful that the search committee is giving me this opportunity and is helping me get back to Indianapolis."

During his time at IUPUI, Jacob also was the director and owner of the Screaming Eagles Soccer Camp, a position he held until 2009. Jacob then got back into the college ranks and for the past two seasons was an assistant coach at Penn State. He was the recruiting coordinator for the Nittany Lions.

Jacob helped the Nittany Lions to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths and a combined 26 wins during the two seasons. This past fall, Penn State finished 14-8-1 and reached the Big 10 championship match. Penn State defeated Old Dominion in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to No. 2 Maryland in the semifinals.

"I could not have found a better place to prepare myself for my first head coaching job than Penn State," Jacob said. "I loved the school and the campus and they had a very good team."

Jacob won't be the only Marion connection at IUPUI next season. Matt Guy, a 2008 Marion High School graduate, enters his senior year with the Jaguars. Guy, a forward, played in all 19 matches for IUPUI last year and ranked third on the team with 20 shot attempts. He had the match-tying goal in a 2-1 win over Oakland (Mich.) on Oct. 2.

Guy is one of six returning seniors for the Jaguars.

"My top priority is to bring in soccer players that really fit IUPUI, both academically and athletically," Jacob said. "I want to recruit players that are going to graduate and get their diploma from IUPUI, and then turn around and be champions in whatever they decide to do."

IUPUI finished last season 9-8-2 and lost to Oakland 3-0 in the opening round of the Summit League Tournament.

Dr. Todd Voss Named Southern Wesleyan University President

It is with sadness and yet with sincere congratulatory enthusiasm that I announce that Dr. Todd Voss has today accepted the position of President at Southern Wesleyan University, our sister institution in Central, South Carolina.

I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Voss for the past seven years and know him to be an amazing dynamic and creative leader. His commitment and passion for Christian higher education, his Christian character and his high energy leadership qualifications are an excellent fit for his new role as a university president.

Since joining Indiana Wesleyan University’s administrative staff in 1989 as Vice President for Student Development, Dr. Voss has played a key role in making the IWU campus a place where students, faculty, guests and visitors feel welcome. He has brought a unique sense of creativity and passion for community that is reflected in the campus facilities and culture that we enjoy today.

Dr. Voss served as IWU Vice President for Student Development for 18 years. In 2007, he was named Executive Vice President where he provided senior-level leadership for student life, spiritual life, information technology, facilities and operations and athletics.

We are grateful for the 22 years of outstanding service Dr. Voss has provided the IWU community. While we know that the resignation of Dr. Voss will be a loss for IWU, we can rest in the assurance that Southern Wesleyan University’s best days are ahead.

Please join me in congratulating Todd and Julie, and offering our best wishes and heartfelt prayers as he assumes the presidency at Southern Wesleyan University on July 1st.

Dr. Voss will succeed Dr. David Spittal, who retired after serving as SWU President for the last 18 years. Somewhat coincidentally, Dr. Spittal was a Vice President at IWU when he accepted the offer to head Southern Wesleyan.

In the coming days I will provide information on structural plans following Dr. Voss departure. I want to reassure the IWU family what I know we believe - God will provide for our needs as we transition to new leadership in the areas under Todd’s responsibility. Pray that God will give wisdom and guidance to us during these times of transition.

Jim and Jerolyn Bogear, authors of Faith Legacy: Six Values to Shape Your Child's Journey, will be featured on FamilyLife Today April 28th and 29th in an interview with Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine entitled "Faith Legacy." The Bogears will share that Faith Legacy is about parenting with a plan. It is about living the legacy long before we ever expect to begin leaving it. They admit that they are no experts, but learning together with others on what has been a journey of raising kids to develop Christ-like characters, who in turn can raise their future children in the same legacy. The two-part feature will discuss the concept of the Legacy trip, a rite-of-passage trip that Jim and Jerolyn used to "hand off" and solidify the values they were instilling in their children from day one. Caroline Poland '10

In January, Ms. Caroline Poland ’10 (Mental Health Counseling) was invited to travel to Cuenca, Ecuador to present a series of lectures at the University of Azuay. This was the first accredited University in Ecuador, and is the “academic capital” of the country. While there, she conducted seminars and discussion groups with professors and graduate students from the University, as well as physicians and counselors from the community.  While there, Ms. Poland lectured on the following topics:

 

1.     Wellness, Resiliency, and Job Burnout

 

2.     Work Life Balance with Mental Health as a Focus

 

3.     Wellness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a Way to Decrease Depression & Suicide

 

4.     Dealing with Depression & Suicide in Students

 

Ecuador is many years behind the United States in the development of Mental Health services, so it was an excellent time of discussions with those in the field.  The professionals we met are eager to learn, and accepting of any resources they can get. Ms. Poland has been personally invited back to speak and teach by the President of the University, and is already planning her next trip.

Alumna of IWU authors - again. "Craving Grace", Tyndale House Publishing

Lisa Velthouse is a freelance writer and speaker who has been working in communications and ministry for over a decade. She got her start in publishing at the age of 17, upon being selected from over 1,000 applicants to write a year's worth of columns for Brio magazine. While writing for Brio, Lisa began speaking at national Evangelical events for teens, and she also got the idea for her first book, Saving My First Kiss, which was published shortly after she turned 21. In the years that followed, for a time she worked as a ghostwriter, and after that served two years on staff at Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, MI.

A believer in God all her life, during her mid-twenties Lisa began to feel disenchanted about him. So for six months she fasted from sweets, in an attempt to learn that God could be sweet. At the start of her fast, she doubted that the process would result in much more than mere discipline, if that. But half a year later, her life and her faith had been transformed. She could see for the first time that it was a story of grace, and she was surprised to find that God's grace is the only true sweetness. Lisa tells the story of her sweets fast and of how life changed for her afterward in her newest book, a memoir called Craving Grace.

Lisa's writing has been noted in Publisher's Weekly and Focus on the Family, and she has been a guest on numerous nationwide radio and television programs. Her travels in speaking have taken her across the United States and abroad. She is married to Nathan, an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps; they live wherever military assignments take them

Alumni / Major League debut

Indiana Wesleyan University alum Brandon Beachy will make his Major League Baseball debut tonight as the starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies.  Tonight's game between the Braves and Phillies will be broadcast nationally on MLB Network. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Dean for the School of Nursing

It gives me great pleasure to announce that after much careful
deliberation and consultation, Dr. Barbara Ihrke has been offered and
accepted the position of Dean for the IWU School of Nursing.

The past two years have brought great achievements for nursing education
at IWU. The faculty and staff of our nursing programs have successfully
completed their ten-year accreditation reaffirmation. They are
continuing their trajectory of growth in quality and in enrollment
numbers. And they are moving successfully through the process of
forming themselves into a united and cohesive School. Through this
time, Dr. Barbara Ihrke has served as Executive Director for the new
School, and has helped to complete an enormous amount of work in a very
short time, and she has served as a catalyst for change.

Over the past several months it has become increasingly clear that Dr.
Ihrke is the person best-prepared to lead the new IWU School of Nursing
forward. Last week I met with the faculty and staff of the School of
Nursing to ask for their input into the leadership decision. Their
responses have been overwhelmingly supportive and complimentary of Dr.
Ihrke.

Dr. Barbara Ihrke has taught nursing at IWU since 1994. She received
her R.N. degree from St. Cloud School of Nursing and holds a Bachelor of
Science from Crown College, Master of Science from Indiana Wesleyan
University and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Her areas of expertise
include transcultural nursing, tropical health, gerontology, and nursing
informatics. She is a research consultant at Marion General Hospital and
a home health nurse. From 1980-1991 she worked in the Democratic
Republic of Congo as a missionary nurse teaching in a school of nursing
and doing primary health care projects. She spent her sabbatical in
Gabon, Africa. Dr. Ihrke has presented her transcultural research at
various national and international conferences. Research areas include
cultural competence of students and nurses as well as spiritual care
issues. Being Uncomfortable: A Transcultural Nursing Experience evolved
from her work with junior nursing students. She is published in Teaching
and Nursing: A Guide for Faculty (Billings and Halstead). Informatics
across the curriculum is an area of interest and writing.

We look forward to a special "grand opening" event for the School of
Nursing to take place later this semester at which we will install Dr.
Ihrke and the School of Nursing Chairs. This will be our chance to
publicly introduce the School to our state, the CCCU, and our own
community.

I would particularly like to thank the search committee members who
worked with me through the search process. I also publicly thank the
faculty and staff of the School of Nursing for their vision, dedication
to IWU and the School of Nursing, and their strong support during this
critical process. It is my conviction that Dr. Ihrke is well prepared
to give leadership to our IWU School of Nursing. Please join me in
praying that she will have God's special wisdom, insight, and courage to
lead this School to the next level of excellence and outreach that God
has planned for us to achieve.
