Caroline Poland '10 lectures in Athens Greece
In May, Ms. Caroline Poland '10 (Mental Health Counseling) was invited to Athens, Greece to present a series of lectures.
The first lecture was presented at the University of Athens Children's Hospital, and was entitled Medical and Psychological Aspects of Decision-Making About Vaccines.
The second lecture was given at the 2011 Mayo Clinic Alumni Association International CME Program Living Long-Living Well. This lecture was entitled Work-Life Balance From the Perspective of a Physician (Father) and Counselor (Daughter): Tantalus Revisited and was co-presented with her father, Dr. Greg Poland (Mayo Clinic).
Ms. Caroline Poland, along with her father Dr. Greg Poland, recently published an editorial in the August issue of the journal Vaccine entitled Vaccine education spectrum disorder: the importance of incorporating psychological and cognitive models into vaccine education.

Homecoming reflections by Rick Carder
The beginning of Homecoming at Indiana Wesleyan University.
In a 1923 Marionette Yearbook, the caption reads, “As the Days Go By”. It records the earliest tradition of what was called then, “Harvest Day”. It was recorded as October 20th, 1923, a Saturday. This was an event that included the Wesleyans of Indiana showing their interest in Marion by making a visit.
“After a big dinner in the dining hall (then lower level of Teter Hall) we had a program in the chapel. Both Dorms kept open house. Hope they liked the dorm, for we worked ‘till eleven o’clock fixing it up. The staff put on their first big drive for subscriptions. The Freshman had the street lights and buildings decorated in their class colors of Gold and White.” (Marionette, 1923. Parenthesis added)
The school was funded and supported by a strong support from the Wesleyan Methodist Connection of America. The school was furthered through enrollment called Subscriptions. The Harvest Day events would be liked to today’s homecoming where student, staff and community come together in celebration and demonstrated support for Marion College.
According to Millie Jacobs Troyer the name eventually became “Harvest-Coming” and in the early 60’s the event was changed to Homecoming. She was the Alumni Director at the time of this name change. Events were held on the grounds of the “Old Triangle” and much was made of the celebration in song; “Cheer! Cheer! For Marion College” and “Down On The Old Triangle”. These song sheet are handed out at every 50/60 Class Reunion Luncheon and the tradition of singing continues.
That would mean that for 91 years we have held to the idea of Homecoming. Perhaps the terms have changed but the tradition and purpose has not!

COL David E. Wilmot assumed duties as the U.S. Army’s Assistant Surgeon General for Mobilization, Readiness and National Guard Affairs and U.S. Army MEDCOM Deputy Chief of Staff for Readiness on 1 November, 2010. As Deputy Chief of Staff for Readiness, COL Wilmot advises the Chief of Staff on medical readiness issues across the Regional Medical Commands and across all Components. As Assistant Surgeon General, he assists the Deputy Surgeon General for the Army National Guard in providing consultative services and strategic planning in all aspects of medical readiness, health care, medical personnel, medical operational and training issues that comprise the critical medical readiness indicators pertaining to the Army National Guard. Prior to this position, COL Wilmot was dual-hatted as the Indiana Army National Guard State Surgeon and Commander of the Indiana Medical Detachment since January 2003.
COL Wilmot is a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1984.

Wishard Health Services Announces New Vice President for Human Resources
INDIANAPOLIS, September 14, 2011 – Wishard Health Services announces that Christia Hicks, MBA, has been named vice president of human resources. Hicks previously served as administrative director of the Regenstrief Specialty Clinics at Wishard.
"Christia is a proven and effective leader who demonstrates an enthusiastic commitment to Wishard and all those we serve," said Dr. Lisa E. Harris, chief executive officer and medical director for Wishard. "During her time at Wishard, Christia has led multiple teams through times of change and progress. She has also championed several critical initiatives including enhanced access, customer service and system integration through technology, all of which will be vitally important as we prepare for a reformed national health care environment. Christia is the right person to assume this senior leadership role."
Hicks began her career at Wishard in 1999. During that time, she has served as a physical therapist, administrator of Lockefield Village Health and Rehabilitation Center, manager of the OB/GYN Clinic, and most recently, administrative director of the Regenstrief Specialty Clinics. As vice president of human resources, Hicks will have administrative responsibility for functions including benefits, compensation, recruitment, retention and employee relations, as well as the Wishard Institute for Employee Development, Volunteer Services, Wishard Wellness, and Occupational Health. She will officially assume her new role on September 18, 2011.
"I am extremely excited to serve Wishard Health Services in this new capacity," said Hicks. "Throughout my tenure at Wishard it has been my pleasure to work with an outstanding group of individuals who are committed to providing quality patient care for the Indianapolis community."
Originally from Rockford, Illinois, Hicks is a 1995 graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where she earned a degree in biology. Two years later, she completed graduate studies in physical therapy at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Most recently, Hicks completed a master's degree in business administration at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is professionally involved in a number of partner and community organizations including United Way of Central Indiana, the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, The Links Incorporated, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Hicks is married to Dr. Ivan Douglas Hicks and has three children.

M. Susana Worth, Alumni of IWU - Joins Girl Scout council
A native of El Salvador, Susana moved to Indiana in 1996, joined the Girl Scout council in Fort Wayne as a volunteer and troop leader in 1997. Susana has worked in various companies and non-profits organizations in NE Indiana and is currently employed at Superior Essex/Essex Brownell. She holds degrees in Business (MBA) from Indiana University, Science degree from Indiana Wesleyan University (BA) along with a Non-Profit Management Certificate from Ivy Tech Community College.

1995 Alumni serving in Arizona
Daniel Stoltzfus graduated in May 2009 with an MPA from New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and accepted a position as Executive Director for Arizona Youth Partnership, a non-profit, statewide organization that reaches under-served communities through abstinence education and substance abuse prevention. His wife Angela (IWU 1995) is teaching U.S. History and Government at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in Tucson AZ, where three of their four children attend school.

Henry Ford Academy: Alameda School of Art + Design in San Antonio school led by Jeffery Flores '10 won the national Cooper-Hewitt Community Design competition.
Young designers are encouraged by institutions to participate in solving social and environmental problems. The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and Ford Motor Co. Fund, for instance announced, just last week, the winners of their Community Design Competition. The competition challenged students to locate opportunities for improvement within their communities, and then brainstorm solutions. Open to schools in Miami, Chicago, San Antonio and San Diego, the competition is part of the Smithsonian and Cooper-Hewitt's ongoing promotion of design as valuable, educative practice for young people. The entries attest to the creativity, enthusiasm, and thoughtfulness with which the students approached their communities' needs.
First-place glory and $5,000 was awarded to the Henry Ford Academy: Alameda School of Art + Design in San Antonio. The 9th-grade students designed a backpack specifically tailored to the needs of the homeless, inspired by their neighbors at the Haven 4 Hope Transition Shelter only a block from their school.

Alumnus - New Principal at Hopkins County Schools
Richey earned bachelor’s degrees in education (K-6) and special education (K-12) at Morehead State University, where she also played basketball. She received her master’s degree in reading and writing education from Murray State University, her Rank 1 in curriculum and instruction from Indiana Wesleyan and her principal’s certification from University of the Cumberlands.
She is also a humanities and reading instructor at Madisonville Community College. She and her husband, Nathan Richey, have two children, Dillon, 9, and Reese, 4.

Old College Church set for demolition ...
In preparation for the proposed Science and Nursing Building, the demolition of Old College Church on the traditional Marion campus has been scheduled to occur during the month of August. The building will be razed and the site leveled prior to the arrival of freshmen students at the end of August.
On August 1, the site of Old College Church will be secured within a fenced area and become the property of Weigand Construction Co. Weigand is responsible for contracting the demolition and will have full control of the area effective on this date. Prior to that date, they will be in the process of installing the fence and identifying the perimeters of the construction zone.
Between now and July 31st, IWU will be salvaging materials from the building. While most items in the building have already been spoken for, we still have numerous church pews which could be available provided they could be removed no later than July 31st.
Please use caution when traveling in the area of the north campus as construction vehicles will also be in this area. Effective September 1st, you can expect to see minor changes in traffic routes in the north campus.
